How to support a friend or family member.
It can be difficult to know how to best support a friend who is struggling with their mental health. Here are some steps to consider taking that could be helpful:
Listen to them without judgement. Allow them to open up at their own pace and try to understand their perspective.
Encourage them to seek professional help. Offer to accompany them to their first appointment or provide resources that may help them.
Let them know that you are there for them. Offer emotional support and remind them that they are not alone.
Validate their feelings. Don’t try to minimize their emotions or give advice unless they request it.
Suggest activities that you can do together to help them cope. This could include going for a walk, watching a movie, or even just talking.
Take care of yourself too. Being there for someone can be emotionally draining, so make sure you’re taking care of yourself as well.
